Thyme is a native herb of the Mediterranean region. The essential oil derived from the herb is noted for its powerful medicinal properties. Thyme oil is prepared by steam distillation of the leaves and flowers of the thyme plant. There are two varieties of thyme essential oil – red thyme essential oil and sweet thyme essential oil. The amber colored red thyme essential oil has a spicy aroma, whereas the pale yellow colored sweet thyme essential oil has a sweet fragrance.

Although, essential oils of rose, fennel, eucalyptus, bergamot and clove posses similar anti-inflammatory properties, a Japanese study has shown that thyme oil is the best essential oil for treating inflammatory conditions. Thyme oil could reduce COX-2 level in the body by almost 75 per cent. Thyme oil owes its anti-inflammatory property to carvacrol, an active agent present in thyme. Researchers have found that pure carvacrol extracts could reduce COX-2 levels by more than 80 per cent.
