Tired? Adrenal Supplements Might Help

August 12, 2010

The adrenals glands positioned on top of the kidneys secrete several important hormones. Cortex, the outer part of the adrenal gland, produces cortisol, an anti-inflammatory hormone. Medulla, the inner part of the adrenal gland, secretes epinephrine and nonepinephrine hormones that regulate the body’s ability to cope with stress.

Physical or mental trauma, excessive workouts, prolonged exposure to toxins, depression, anxiety, insomnia or poor sleep, infection, malnutrition, pregnancy and certain medications are bad for the health of the adrenal glands. Unexplained fatigue that refuses to go despite taking adequate rest is a common sign of adrenal burnout. Poor adrenal function causes abnormal reduction in the blood pressure, blood sugar and body temperature. Adrenal supplements are often recommended for enhancing the activities of the adrenal glands.

Adrenal supplements
Vitamin C
Vitamin C supplements could reduce the harmful impact of excessive stress on the adrenal glands. Large doses of vitamin C could help the adrenal glands to restore their normal activities. To boost the functions of the adrenal glands, you should take 2000 to 5000 mg of vitamin C daily.

Vitamin B complex
Vitamin B complex supplements, especially vitamins B6, B12 and pantothenic acid reduce fatigue associated with adrenal malfunction. Deficiency of pantothenic acid or vitamin B5 is especially harmful for the adrenal glands. Deficiency of this important B vitamin could cause adrenal atrophy. Daily intake of 100 mg of vitamin B5 might prevent problems of the adrenal glands.

Vitamin E
People suffering from adrenal fatigue should take vitamin E supplements. Vitamin E lessens fatigue by improving oxygen circulation.

Multi mineral supplements
Multi mineral supplements containing magnesium, calcium, potassium, iron, zinc, selenium and chromium could improve the health of the adrenal glands.

Herbal supplements
Herbal supplements containing licorice root extract could improve the health of the adrenal glands. However, this herb is not recommended for people with high blood pressure. Licorice increases the risk of sodium retention and edema.

You can even take milk thistle seeds, Echinacea and astragalus for boosting adrenal gland function. Different varieties of Ginseng, especially Siberian ginseng and Panax ginseng could restore the normal functions of the adrenal glands. Ginseng is often recommended for treating adrenal fatigue. This herbal energy booster increases stamina by stimulating carbohydrate metabolism.
